Sunday 21
Snow fell all
day with short intervals,
by 12 oclock there was fully
4 inches of snow lying about
& by evening it was a perfect
picture. After dinner we all
went out on the lawn & started
to build a snow hill to be
photographed if possible.
Worked at it till 6 oclock
or thereabout , finishing up in
moonlight. Children had a
great time snowballing &
all & sundry persons had
the times of their lives with
snow fighting. Heaviest fall
of snow ever experienced
in the North Island & it
will long be remembered
by both young & old.

Saturday 20
Fair day rather cold.
Down to office. Clarke in
& signed agreement to
buy Rupert Welch’s property.
Down to Chess room at night
& continued my game against
my Wanganui opponent
but had not played out by 11.30
when wires could not be sent
thro [through]. Gave my game, as I was
2 pieces down.

War news state Allied forces
have attacked the Germans
& have driven them back for
some miles, forcing them to
recross the river Marne,
leaving thousands of prisoners
behind also large numbers
of big guns & material.

Heavy storm came up from the
South at about 12.30 am.

Terrific storm raged
at day & at night & snow
fell at intervals all day
& lay thick on the ground.
Wind bitterly cold the worst
storm & heaviest fall of snow
for over 20 years. Townsfolk
indulged in snowballing
all & sundry some getting on to
tops of buildings from where
they pelted all & sundry
pedestrians, equestrians, car
drivers etc. Wind raged all
day. Clarkes offer of £575 for
R Welch’s property accepted.

War news state that counter
attacks by the Allied forces
have driven the Germans
back, the French having
advanced over 4 miles to
wards Soissons. Germans
claim to have captured
18000 prisoners

Thursday 18
Cold day with rain
indications. Clarke in re
R Welch’s house & after look
ing over the property he made
an offer of £575. Sent offer
up to Rupert at Mount
Bruce. Home about 3.30
changed then sawed a
cut off a big log at the road
junction & split it for fire
wood. Down to Chess
at night & played Kemble
my nephew in Dagg Shield
competition having a pawn &
move handicap on him.
After a very even game I
managed to score a win.
Heavy storm came up
just about 12 oclock
& the wind drove up from
the South with hurricane
force & hail & sleet be
gan to fall.

Wednesday 17
Fair day with
occasional showers.
Mr & Mrs Beale in for house
to buy & I hired a car (cost
25/-) & we inspected about
a dozen properties, one in
Pownall Str [Street] of Cambourne’s
being rather fancied but no
deal was made. Mr Clarke
of Te Ore Ore in & got in
formation about properties
& arranged to inspect
tomorrow.

War news state Germans
heavily attacking all along
the Western front but
are held up by the Allied
forces, the Americans doing
good work on their sector
of the line, counter attacking
& driving back the enemy.
French also by counter
drives recovered ground
& villages.

Cold weather.
Not much doing.
Mr Beale in re purchase
of property & arranged to
bring Mrs Beale in tomor
row to inspect houses.

War news state that the
Germans have attacked
the Western Allies & have
made considerable ad
vance in places & have
been driven back at others

Showery weather &
rather cold. Down to
office. Mrs Beale with his
wife called in re purchasing
a house & we went out to
look at some & arranged to
go out again tomorrow.
Tom Wrigley also in & we
went round to see some
properties & then saw
King about his house in
Queen Street.

War news state that the
Allied troops have made
a good advance in Macedonia-
the Italian & Franco forces
driving the Bulgarians
out of a large extent of coun
try. French also retake
considerable area from
the Germans on the Western
front & capture prisoners
over 500
Reported that General
Hindenburg is dead.

Rain during the afternoon
& gave evidence of very
heavy weather being in
store. Before dinner I
wheeled some soil from
the bank up the hill down
to the garden. Odd jobs
after dinner & put kerosene
with a brush on to our
Reinette du Canada apple
tree which is badly effected
with Woolly Aphis.

Fine day. At office.
Mr F Beale of Rakanui in
re purchasing a house & section
& asked me to see what
Kavanagh would take for
his property in Worksop
Road.
Down tour chess room at
night to take part in tele
graphic chess match
against Wanganui Chess club.
Mr G A Jones captained
our team & I was given
board 7, my opponent being
Harle. At close of play 11.45
I had a bad outlook being 2
pieces down. All players
made sealed moves & the
games will be continued next
Saturday night. Home
about 12.30. Our niece
Winny Diederich came down
from Palmerston to stay for
a week with us.
