Fine day.  Chipped in some
oats before breakfast.
At office. Saw W.M. Laing
and gave him pars [particulars] of 3500
acres, being Port Douglas
station, Auckland, which
I received from Wheatley
Raven and Co.  Busy with corres
pondence.  Heavy earthquake at
about 7.30 p.m. which shook
an ornamental concrete ball
from the top of the P Office and it
struck a young native named
Rawiri on the head, killing him
instantly.
