Up early & met H Renall &
his wife at Rly Stn [Railway Station] & went
with them to Wellington en route
to Otaki to inspect some bush
land there. Arrived in Wgtn [Wellington] &
rang up J B Finlay, agent
on whom we called & got plan of
the land & prices etc, then
went & had dinner at Fail’s.
Spent an hour in town, saw Ern
at the native office & he went
with me to Manawatu Rly Stn [Manawatu Railway Station] from
where Renalls & I took train at 4.15
for Otaki where we arrives at
about 7& put up at the Rly Hotel [Railway Hotel].
Heavy storm in Wgtn [Wellington] & as far as
Paikakariki [Paekakariki]. Came on during night
at Otaki. Met lawyer, Stevens
who arranged for us to see a client of
his who had a farm for sale.
After breakfast we met Stevens
who gave us pars [particulars] of Mr D
Judd’s property of 1000 acres
up Otaki gorge. Judd & son came
with dog cart & drove us in to see
the place, 12 miles. Rain most of the
way. Arrived there about 12 oclock
boiled the kettle made tea 7 had
lunch in the whare. Took a short
look round part of ppty [property] then left
for Otaki. Rain all the way in but
we kept fairly dry. Arrived at stn [station]
just as the train whistled in &
we bustled in after paying our bills
etc. Judd & Stevens wanted us to stay
for later train but Mrs R [Mrs Renall] wanted to
get on. Supper in Wgtn [Wellington] at 8pm then
I trammed out to Ada’s at Seatoun.
Very stormy night. Took them by
George & I up early the former
getting me a cup of tea & some
bread & butter which, after partake
ing, I caught the tram at 6.58 &
arrived at Wellington Rly Stn [Wellington Railway Station] at
7.50 where Renall & wife had
arrived before me. They pulled
up at Carterton 7 I landed at
Masterton at 11.40. Arranged
to go to Hawkes Bay with Renall
& wife next week if possible.
Cold wet day. Put up
some shelves in the stable.
Played Kemble 4 games of
chess winning one & losing 3
Rain in early morning then
cleared for the day, though
rather cold. At office.
Not much doing. Bertha
down town & we went to
Liberty’s & purchased a
wedding present for Miss
Mabel Nitz who is to be married
tomorrow to Mr Major S Wills
of Wellington. Down to YMCA
rooms at night & attended
the annual meeting of the chess
club & was elected one of the
two Vice Presidents, Mr Moore
being the other.
Fine day. At office. Attended
wedding of Miss Mabel Nitz to
Major Stanley Wills of Welling
ton. Reception was afterwards
held in Exchange Hall where
about 70 guests sat down to
a bountiful wedding break
fast. Mr J M Hornsby was
present & made a very fine
speech when proposing the
health of the parents
Rain. Cold day. At office.
Not much doing.
Down to YMCA room
at night & played chess
Mr J Dagg, our President,
playing Mr Thompson &
me. Thompson lost & I
won my game.
