25 April 1916

Tuesday 25
Fair day. Down to office.
Not much doing. Attended corres
pondence. Had lunch at Kia Ora
tea rooms. All business premises
closed at 12 oclock to allow the
public to take part in the service
held on the Park Oval to
commemorate the landing of the
troops on the Gallipoli Peninsula
when so many of our gallant boys lost
their lives. The Rev Mr Brown deliv
ered a most stirring address &
other ministers took part in the cere
mony. A very nice service was gone
thro [through] hymns being sung& the Master
ton Municipal band playing, under
their own conductor partly, & partly
under Mr Wells, the conductor of the choir
of the Anglican Church. About 1000 people
were on the ground including a
number of the returned soldiers
in uniform and a number of terri
torials under Lieutenant Brighting.
Returned soldiers had to stand through
out the service for over an hour no one
having thought of providing seats for them.
